Two Fort Cavazos soldiers charged in connection to murder

Nicholas Lowery and Rene Heber were both set to face a trial in May.

FORT CAVAZOS, Texas — Two Fort Cavazos soldiers were charged in connection to a murder and will be tried, according to court dockets found on the U.S. Army Court-Martial Public Records system.

Spc. Nicholas Lowery is charged with murder and two counts of obstruction of justice. His trial was scheduled for May 6 in the Lawrence Williams Judicial Center on post. Pretrial hearings for Lowery were set for April 5 and April 25.

Spc. Rene Heber is charged with accessory after the fact and two counts of obstruction of justice. His trial was set for May 20. Heber was arraigned on Feb. 1. He was scheduled for a pretrial hearing on April 15.

The docket does not list the victim. 6 News submitted a public records request to Fort Cavazos for information about the victim and for any arrest affidavits or other documentation that would explain the charges on Thursday. 

When reached by phone, Monty Campbell with the Public Affairs Office told 6 News they were working on a statement. As of the time this article was published, we had not received anything.

A spokesperson for the Army Criminal Investigation Division in Arlington, VA said the case was under investigation and they could not release any other information.

According to a Stars and Stripes report, Heber is accused of knowing that another specialist shot a sergeant in the head and killed him around Aug. 27 while on post and lied about it.

Fort Cavazos Sgt. Alfredo Martinez, 30, died Aug. 27, according to his obituary. In an interview with Univision Martinez's family said they do not believe the version authorities gave them that Martinez committed suicide.

Martinez was one of four Fort Cavazos soldiers to die between Aug. 11 and Aug. 23 in 2023. According to their obituaries, they were Jama Dolan and Rowdy Liverman on Aug. 11, and Xavier Johnson on Aug. 15. Army officials did not release official causes of death for any of them.
