Texas gas prices reach $2 for first time in 2016

For the first time in 2016, the average price for a gallon of regular unleaded gas has reached $2 per gallon in Texas, according to AAA.

For the first time in 2016, the average price for a gallon of regular unleaded gas has reached $2 per gallon in Texas, according to AAA.

The average price for a gallon of regular unleaded in Austin is $1.99, up seven cents from April 29, but 38 cents lower than May 2015.

"More people are taking road trips and that increase in demand at the pump is one of the reasons why we're seeing the prices over $2.00," AAA Texas spokesman Doug Shupe said. "That in addition to the increase in cost of crude oil."

AAA is predicting 2016 will be a record year for annual miles traveled and for gasoline consumption. Experts predict gas prices will steadily increase and should cap off around $2.50 per gallon during the summer, before declining in the fall.
