Subject detained for mental evaluation faces no criminal charges after SWAT call-out Sunday

Police said the subject surrendered after hostage negotiators spoke with him over the phone during the situation in South Austin.

AUSTIN — On Sunday morning, members of Austin SWAT were called out to the scene of an armed suspect threatening to harm officers. The scene is inactive as of 10:01 a.m.

Police said a neighbor woke up to a man in the street screaming and yelling around 5:10 Sunday morning. They called 911 and said the subject appeared to be under the influence of alcohol or drugs. Soon after, officers arrived on scene.

The subject is described as a 29-year-old white male. Police said they have history with the subject.

When officers arrived on scene, the suspect ran inside his house, yelling that he would harm police. Then, officers called in SWAT when they saw the suspect handling a firearm.

Police said two other people were inside the home when it started but officers were able to safely evacuate them from the house. Residents of surrounding houses were also evacuated.

Hostage negotiators spoke with the subject over the phone for three hours and, at 9:35 a.m., he surrendered to police. He is now detained at a local hospital for mental evaluation.

It happened at Kimono Ridge Drive and Sarong Way, that's near Slaughter Lane and Manchaca Road.

The subject will not face any criminal charges because his threats to police were verbal and he did not produce a firearm aimed at officers.
