Students find bugs, mold, and urine in Central East Austin apartments

Some students moved into their new apartments in Central East Austin and said they found bugs, mold, and urine left in the toilet. Dozens of residents moving in waited in the lobby for hours in hopes of getting their issues resolved.

AUSTIN, Texas — Some students moved into their new apartments at the Ball Park Apartments in Central East Austin and said they found bugs, mold, and urine left in the toilet.

The complex attracts lots of students near the University of Texas, Austin Community College, and St. Edwards University.

Elijah Hare got the keys to his first apartment, but instead of having feelings of excitement, he's fighting to get his money back.

The Austin Community College student said the nice and neat apartment he expected to walk into turned out to be filthy.

"My biggest concern is right here at the refrigerator, if you pull it out you can see the bugs,” said Hare.

Aside from the bugs, he said there was a dirty tub, a ripped couch, and broken faucet. In the midst of the situation, Hare said he’s paying extra for an upgraded apartment.

"I'm planning on leaving like this is not a place where you want to stay,” Hare said.

And he's not alone.

Leah Lawson was moving her son into Ball Park Apartments and mold was only one of the problems she found, including urine left in the toilet and dirty laundry.

“I was aghast,” said Lawson. “I couldn't believe what I was seeing. I've never seen a condition like that moving in. It was supposed to be move-in ready."

Lawson said this is a misrepresentation of what they were told they were going to get. Lawson and dozens of others waited hours in the lobby in hopes of getting their issues resolved.

As for Hare and his first apartment, he's left disappointed.

“I come in here trying to be a man and this is what I get,” said Hare. “This is not fair."

KVUE was told that Lawson’s son has been let out of his lease. Others KVUE spoke to said they are planning on getting lawyers involved.

KVUE called the complex several times, but its voicemail was full and have not received a call back.
