Southeast Austin neighborhood evacuated after gas line struck by contractors

The fire department said streets are closed down at Vargas Road, Felix Avenue and at Montopolis.

AUSTIN — The Austin Fire Department is working to evacuate a neighborhood after a gas line was struck by contractors late Thursday morning.

The AFD reported around 11:20 a.m. that they were setting up to mitigate the hazard. At that time, roadways were closed at Felix Avenue, Vargas Road and Montopolis Drive. Felix Avenue was shut down between Vargas and Richardson.

A Hazmat Task Force, Texas Gas Service and the Austin Police Department are assisting. The call originally came in at 10:53 a.m. Around 2:30 p.m., officials reported the line break was mitigated and the closures and evacuation would be lifted promptly.

Officials said a four-inch poly line was ruptured, causing three homes and eight people to be evacuated. Fire crews have hose lines ready in case it ignites.
