Sentencing for man who attempted to kill Travis County judge pushed back to October

The sentencing phase is set to begin at 9 a.m.

AUSTIN — The man who tried to assassinate a Travis County Judge will have to wait until October to see if he will spend the rest of his life behind bars.

In April, a jury found Chimene Onyeri guilty on all 17 counts against him, including a racketeering charge and the attempted capital murder of Judge Julie Kocurek in 2015.

The sentencing hearing for Onyeri was set to begin at 9 a.m. Aug. 17, but officials rescheduled the hearing for Oct. 1.

"When you shoot a judge in front of her children in her driveway because she's a judge, you're going to get the attention of people like this," said Assistant U.S. Attorney Gregg Sofer told KVUE in April. "We're gonna work night and day to make sure that kind of thing doesn't happen."

The maximum punishment he could face is life in prison without parole.
