Seniors that score: Round Rock Parks and Rec seeks players for 'Granny Basketball League'

Round Rock is home to some baller grandmas! It is now registering for its 2019 "Granny Basketball League."

ROUND ROCK, Texas — It's being advertised as "a gentle game for women of a certain age."

It's the Granny Basketball League, and the Round Rock Parks and Recreation Department is now registering for its 2019 season.

According to the department, the league will play at the Clay Madsen Recreation Center.

As their website states, the goal of the Granny Basketball League is to empower women to promote "a spirit of camaraderie, a model of sportsmanship and friendly competition." Along the way, they hope to honor the women of the past and set an example for those to follow.

It was created to provide:

  • Fun, competitive exercise for women over the age of 50.
  • An avenue for charitable giving.
  • Wholesome, nostalgic, and sometimes humorous entertainment.
  • Recognition for mature women.
  • A method of preserving the history of six-on-six basketball.

Round Rock joins a list of about 30 teams in states like Iowa, Kansas, Louisiana, Minnesota, Missouri, Oklahoma, Texas, Virginia and Wisconsin.

Each team selects a charity or non-profit, to which they give gate receipts. All members involved -- from players to referees to scorekeepers -- are volunteers and do not receive compensation for their time or expenses.
