Man arrested for manslaughter after deadly October crash on State Highway 71 near Lakeway

Officials said a vehicle had lost control, crashing into another vehicle traveling in the opposite direction, leading to the death of one in an accident on State Highway 71 on Oct. 29.

LAKEWAY, Texas — A man has now been arrested after being accused in a crash that resulted in the death of another driver on State Highway 71 on Oct. 29.

Texas Highway Patrol stated a truck being driven westbound on SH 71 by 29-year-old Cameron James O'Connell from Austin, lost control and skid into oncoming traffic before colliding with an eastbound traveling vehicle, driven by 36-year-old Michael James Babineaux from Austin.

According to highway patrol, Babineaux died on scene and O'Connell was transported with injuries.

The Lakeway Police Department reported the crash occurred on the 17000 block of SH 71 near Serene Hills Drive and Sweetwater. Shortly after the crash before 8 p.m., traffic was limited to one lane in each direction of the highway while Serene Hills drivers were rerouted.

The Travis County Sheriff's Office and Department of Public Safety officials worked the crash while the LPD assisted with traffic.

O'Connell has now been arrested and is being charged with manslaughter. His bail has been set at $250,000.

Texas Highway Patrol stated the crash is still an active investigation.
