Lake Travis ISD sued over peanut allergy controversy

In the lawsuit, the plaintiffs allege that the district ignored bullying against the student and that Lake Travis ISD violated his rights.

AUSTIN, Texas — Lake Travis ISD is facing a federal civil lawsuit over how it handled a controversy surrounding a student's severe allergy attack last fall.

In October, district leaders said high school football players put peanuts in the locker of a teammate who had a severe peanut allergy.

Now, that student and his mother are suing Lake Travis ISD and Lake Travis High School leaders.

In the lawsuit, the plaintiffs allege that the district ignored bullying against the student and that Lake Travis ISD violated his rights under the Americans with Disabilities Act because of his severe allergy.

At recent school board meetings, other parents have said that much of what's been reported about that incident wasn't true and students and coaches are still seeing backlash on social media months later.

In a statement, Lake Travis ISD leaders told KVUE: "We take all allegations of bullying and harassment seriously. We responded immediately when we learned of this situation, conducting a thorough investigation. We disagree with the allegations contained in the lawsuit, and we look forward to responding through the appropriate legal channels. The safety of our students and staff is our highest priority."
