International artist teaches students to use art to express themselves

An international artist visited an Austin elementary school on Friday to teach kids how to use art to express their feelings.

AUSTIN, Texas — The Downtown Austin Alliance foundation is bringing more art to Downtown Austin through Writing on the Walls, a week-long celebration of art.

During the week, artists will also visit classrooms to teach students about expressing themselves.

"Creating and sparking creativity in our community starts with our children," said Molly Alexander, the executive director of the Downtown Austin Alliance foundation. "And really we have an opportunity to change the landscape, to change their opinions of themselves, and to really use art as a way to ignite and spark this Austin spirit."

International artist Sandra Chevrier visited students at Gullett Elementary School on Friday morning to teach them about using art as a way to express their feelings.

"Art is a language. It can be a very personal language but it's also universal," said Chevrier. "So it was important for me to let them know if they feel sad or they feel angry, then they can release their emotions through creating an artwork."

Tela Guilbeaux is a fifth-grader at Gullett Elementary. She said she learned that art is a way to express herself.

"A lot of people they usually do art as just a hobby, but some people they do it for more than just a hobby; they do it for actually letting out their feelings," said Guilbeaux.

Writing on the Walls runs until March 11.
