Driver struck pole with car before dying in fiery crash in West Travis County, police say

Police said the vehicle struck a fixed object on Old Bee Cave Road.

TRAVIS COUNTY, Texas — One person was killed late Tuesday morning after a fiery crash in western Travis County.

Austin police said they responded to the crash with the Austin Fire Department at 11:49 a.m. in the 9400 block of Old Bee Cave Road.

Austin police said the driver was traveling northbound when he or she, for some "unknown reasons," veered off the roadway and struck a large, metal utility pole. The car eventually caught fire, and fire crews were able to extinguish it.

Police said the driver and only person in the vehicle died at the scene. There were no witnesses in this incident.

The Austin Police Department's Vehicular Homicide Unit is investigating.

The APD said the eastbound and westbound lanes of Highway 71 have been closed. Police said Old Bee Cave Road at Highway 71 would be shut down for three to four hours. Drivers are asked to avoid the area. By 4:20 p.m., officials said Highway 71 was back open except for one lane.
