Community joins forces to counter Westboro Baptist Church protests on local episcopal churches

Activists from many walks of life came together to stand in solidarity, side by side with the local churches.

AUSTIN -- The Westboro Baptist Church members protested against local episcopal churches in Austin Sunday morning.

The church members -- who are known for their extreme stance against the LGBT community and protesting at United States soldier's funerals -- stood outside of the Austin Convention Center, and the All Saints' and the St. David's Episcopal churches before Sunday morning mass.

The All Saints' and St. David's Episcopal churches are welcoming of the LGBT community.

At each location, the church members met with counter protestors and side by side they stood with one thing in common.

"It's solidarity. It's solidarity against hate," said Riley Dosh, one of the counter protesters.

"It's awesome. You have LGBT activists, you have Episcopalian activists, you have Trump supporters, you have all a variety of people coming together to oppose these people," said Dosh.

Different activist groups showed up separate from each other all standing on the same side.

"It shows me a lot more than I realized about my community, that we are a community and we have to pull together," said Angela Brown, a counter protestor.

"These over here with the gay pride flags wanna live the life they wanna live. That's what America is about. We are about love, not hate," said Jeremy Brooks, another counter protestor who wore a "Make America Great Again" hat to the protest.

"Everybody wants to say what they want about me being a Trump supporter or whatever they wanna say, but the truth of it is, I stand with everybody. We believe in solidarity within our communities," said Brooks.

And wherever the Westboro Baptist Church members went, counter protestors followed.

In the past, Westboro Baptist Church members have been attacked physically and that is why they receive police protection.

Sunday, there were no reports about any physical violence or arrests.
