City may rebuild spring to expand endangered salamander habitat

Austin could soon rebuild a small stream to expand the habitat of the endangered Barton Springs salamander.

AUSTIN -- Austin could soon rebuild a small stream to expand the habitat of the endangered Barton Springs salamander.

Eliza Spring, just behind the famous Barton Springs pool, is home to about 300 salamanders, according to KVUE's content partners at the Austin American-Statesman.

Back in the 1920s, crews replaced the stream connecting it to the pool with underground pipe.

Now, they want to undo that.

Planning should be finished in June with construction starting next winter.

The work should take about four months, and Barton Springs pool will remain open.
