Butter sprayer could be better | Austin product featured on 'Shark Tank' sparks BBB investigation

The Better Business Bureau said they have responded to multiple complaints regarding the Biem butter sprayer.

An Austin entrepreneur, Doug Foreman, swam with the sharks and got an offer.

Foreman was featured on ABC's "Shark Tank" in 2016 with his product, Biem. Basically, the product uses a stick of butter, heat and air to make it sprayable.

Lori Greiner, one of the investors on the show, later pulled out of the deal.

“Lori Greiner has no affiliation with this company. She did not make an investment after the ‘Shark Tank’ episode aired because they did not have a working prototype during due diligence, so Laurie passed on the deal,” said Dan Greiner, Chief Operating Officer of Lori Greiner Companies.

Those with the Better Business Bureau said they've received 33 complaints from across the country, including four in Texas.

Crystal Washington, the Austin regional director with the Better Business Bureau, said complaints ranged from faulty products to no refunds.

“They are working to provide new products to some of those consumers. They've only responded to eight of those 33 complaints,” said Washington. “But they did mention they are working on a version 2.0 and getting those to those consumers and customers.”

The company, Brevda Inc., said in a statement that a manufacturing issue caused some clogging, and they are working to coordinate refunds or replacements.

They also say they have a new version of the product that should be ready in a few weeks.

Washington said she wants to remind customers to review refund policies and always do research on a company prior to buying a product.

FULL STATEMENT FROM COMPANY:

"The Biem butter sprayer enjoyed some incredible initial success with more than 10,000 units sold. Due to a manufacturing issue related to a small number of units clogging, we proactively stopped selling units in an effort to redesign the interior of the butter sprayer. After a tremendous effort by our team to test and retest, we are proud to say that we have addressed the previous issue and have a well-tested, great working product. A small percentage of units originally sold were experiencing the issue and we've worked to coordinate refunds or replacements with those customers. We are currently processing our first fulfillment with the new improvements to the unit and, once they arrive at the distribution center, they will begin shipping out. We expect that process to be complete in the next two weeks. Every unit that is being shipped out to our customers is being tested twice - as a new part of the process - before going out to our fans."
