Drivers have been seen using the bike lane as a turning lane near the Austin Community College Highland campus

Local residents and cyclists near the ACC Highland Campus said this highlights a bigger issue in Austin about sharing the road.

AUSTIN, Texas — Hectic intersections can be found all over the Austin area, but a particular intersection outside the Austin Community College Highland campus has been raising the eyebrows of nearby residents.

With ACC students shuffling to class, Capital Metro trains buzzing through, cyclists cruising by and construction, there's a lot going on at Airport Boulevard and Denson Drive on any given day.

"Depending on the time of day, it can get kind of hairy around here," Joe Romano, who walks and bikes along the mixed-use path daily, said.

Romano said the light to turn right on Airport Boulevard can take a very long time to turn green and when it does, only a few cars are able to get through before it changes again.

Recently, Romano said he noticed something troubling because of the slow light.

"Cars were jumping the tracks over to the path here. You can still see the tire marks," he said.

Drivers have been seen using the bike lane as a turn lane. Romano posted on Reddit about this concern one evening and got hundreds of comments from local residents who have been seeing similar issues in their neighborhoods.

"It's a multi-million dollar project putting all this in and cars are going to eat that curb up," Romano said. "We're going to pay more taxpayer dollars we shouldn't have to because people are misusing the space!"

Romano said he got a response back from city call center Austin 311, saying it will be looking into the issue.
