No fine issued after OSHA ends investigation into Austin airport employee's death in October

The accident occurred on Oct. 31, 2023, when a fuel storage vehicle struck an employee with the city aviation department.

AUSTIN, Texas — A federal investigation conducted by the U.S. Labor Department's Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) determined that the death of a city employee at Austin-Bergstrom International Airport (AUS) in October 2023 was accidental.

The accident occurred on Oct. 31 when a fuel storage vehicle struck 68-year-old Michael Wills, who was an employee with the city's aviation department. Wills died at the scene of the accident.

OSHA's findings come after an investigation by the Austin Police Department (APD) that also found Wills' death to be accidental.

Wills's death was the second that Austin's airport had in 2023, following the death of 37-year-old Michael Ingraham, an employee of American Airlines. Ingraham died as a result of being pinned between a ground service vehicle and a jet bridge.
