Austin police support son of fallen officer at high school graduation

Several members of the Austin Police Department attended a high school graduation ceremony Friday to show their support for graduate Mati Abdul-Khaliq, whose father, Amir, died earlier this year while serving the APD.

Several members of the Austin Police Department attended a high school graduation ceremony Friday to show their support for graduate Mati Abdul-Khaliq, whose father, Amir, died earlier this year while serving the APD.

In a video shared by the APD, Mati, a graduate of McNeil High School, can be seen walking the stage in his robes and greeting nearly 20 officers with a hug and a handshake.

Chief Brian Manley shared a tweet congratulating Mati for his accomplishments, and commemorating his father with the words, “Always family & never forgotten.”

Amir, a 46-year-old Austin police officer, passed away in Sept. 2016 due to injuries sustained in a motorcycle crash while escorting a funeral procession. He had served the APD for 17 years.
