Austin police, fire chiefs race to snag toys for families

AUSTIN — As 2018 draws to a close, Austin's police and fire chiefs are helping some families have happy holidays.

Police Chief Brian Manley and Fire Chief Joel Baker laced up their running shoes and raced through a South Austin CostCo store on Tuesday.

They had two minutes to grab up to $10,000 worth of stuff, all of which goes toward Operation Blue Santa.

This is an annual event, but for Fire Chief Baker, it was a first.

"It's a great day when police and fire, and EMS as well, and the community of Austin to come together and support the kids," Chief Baker said.

The goal for Operation Blue Santa this year is to help more than 4,000 families.
