1 person taken to hospital after fire involving 'multiple explosions' at home in far East Austin

The cause of the fire is unknown at this time, but propane and gas canisters inside the home caused the explosions.

AUSTIN, Texas — One person is in the hospital after a house fire involving "multiple explosions" at a home in far East Austin.

Eddie Martinez, a division chief with the Austin Fire Department (AFD), said AFD got a "medical call" at 10:06 a.m. Friday at a home in the 4600 block of Imperial Drive, near FM 969 and FM 973. AFD said it had received reports of a disturbance inside a home associated with "multiple explosions, fire, and smoke" inside.

Martinez said one person was inside the home when firefighters arrived, and crews helped that person get out. Austin-Travis County EMS (ATCEMS) evaluated two people at the scene, and one was taken to a hospital for treatment for burns.

A total of 45 firefighters responded to the scene, according to Martinez.

AFD does not know the cause of the fire at this time, but products inside the home like propane and gas canisters caused the explosions.

Austin Energy said it has crews on the scene as well, though the reasoning is unclear at this time.

No additional information is available at this time.
