Court documents reveal new details after man killed while walking dog in northwest Austin

Authorities found the man unresponsive with multiple gunshot wounds in the middle of a roadway.

AUSTIN, Texas — Days after a man was shot and killed in northwest Austin, court documents revealed new details on the deadly shooting.

According to an affidavit, 49-year-old Stephen Mark Peterman was reportedly letting his dog outside in the moments leading up to the shooting on Amarillo Avenue.

Law enforcement found Peterman lying on the road with multiple gunshot wounds in his torso. Despite efforts to revive Peterman, he died at the scene.

According to the affidavit, Peterman's wife said her husband would often let their dog out early in the morning. On Monday, she awoke to a series of gunshots outside of their home. In total, there were six shots fired. Peterman's body was located near his white work truck.

A peace officer with the Travis County Sheriff's Office believes Peterman saw the suspect breaking into his vehicle, which led to the shooting.

According to the affidavit, law enforcement identified 36-year-old William Jewel Daniels of San Antonio as the suspect. Law enforcement said Daniels' vehicle was spotted on a neighbor's security camera. Detectives then used license plate readers to search for Daniels' vehicle, which was spotted about two miles from the shooting.

Daniels was later arrested and charged with Peterson's murder. He remains in Travis County Jail on a $1 million bond.
