Man in custody after SWAT situation in southwest Austin neighborhood

Callers reported that a man was walking around with an assault rifle and pointed it at someone.

AUSTIN, Texas — The Austin Police Department (APD) said a man in his 50s is in custody following a SWAT situation Thursday morning.

APD Cpl. José Mendez said at approximately 8:10 a.m. Thursday, officers responded to a "gun urgent" call in the 2500 block of Collins Street, near Menchaca Road and West William Cannon Drive, in southwest Austin. Callers reported that a man was brandishing an assault rifle and that he had pointed it at someone.

When officers arrived at the scene, they received a description of the man and learned that he was also wearing body armor.

At 8:30 a.m., the man was spotted in his backyard. He then went back inside his home, and APD SWAT was notified and responded to the scene.

A reverse 911 was sent to nearby residents, telling them to stay inside their homes. A local elementary school was also placed on lockdown.

At 10:08 a.m., Mendez said SWAT members began to approach the residence and the suspect came out shortly after. The situation ended peacefully, with the man taken into custody.

The suspect has been charged with aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, a felony. Other charges are also pending.

Mendez said this situation appears to be the result of a dispute between neighbors, but there is no ongoing threat to the public. Detectives remained on scene as of around 11:30 a.m. and were in the process of obtaining a search warrant for the suspect's residence.

The shelter-in-place order has been lifted for residents in the area, and normal operations have resumed at the elementary school.

No injuries were reported.
