2019 'Cool House Tour' kicks off this weekend in Austin

You can tour eight different homes throughout Austin, and one in Leander.

AUSTIN, Texas — There will be some cool houses on display across Austin this weekend. And when we say "cool," we mean both uses of the word.

On Sunday, June 9, the 23rd annual Cool House Tour will be presented by Austin Energy, Austin Energy Green Building (AEGB) and the Texas Solar Energy Society (TXSES).

The Cool House Tour is a self-guided tour that showcases homes that are designed and built to demonstrate energy efficiency, sustainability and staying cool even despite blistering Central Texas heat during the summer months.

"It's a great way of engaging the customers that we serve," said Debbie Kimberly, vice president of customer energy solutions and corporate communications at Austin Energy. "Austin Energy next year will celebrate its 125th anniversary, and we're all about being customer-driven and community-focused. And this is the perfect time of year to really double down on that focus."

Kimberly explained that despite many of their modern designs, not all of the homes are new. Some are older homes that have been remodeled to become more energy efficient.

"One of the things that's amazing about many of these homeowners is they actually learned about our program and got ideas for their remodels by attending past tours," she said.

KVUE's Leslie Adami toured the north home that's being featured on Louise Lane and met with the homeowners and architect:

The Cool House Tour begins at 10 a.m. and runs through 6 p.m. Visitors are welcomed to visit as many of the homes they'd like.
