$70 million worth of renovations coming to University of Texas at Austin tower

Changes are coming to the structure starting January 2025.

AUSTIN, Texas — Since 1937, the University of Texas at Austin has been the home to a 307-foot-tall structure: the UT Tower.

With 27 floors, an observation deck, and a series of windows, this building is well-known even beyond the campus.

Now a $70 million renovation project has been approved by the school's Board of Regents. Beginning January 2025, the tower should see changes, including the restoration of the clock, limestone masonry and windows, as well as indoor updates to the lobbies, elevators, restrooms and lighting.

Additionally, a new waterproof element will be added to the observation deck and enhancements will be made to the landscaping outside.

According to KVUE's media partner at the Austin American-Statesman, funding for the project is still in the works as the university attempts to gather $26 million worth of donations. The Permanent University Fund bond plans to match this donation and the Available University Fund should provide another $18 million to the cause

The majority of funds will be spent on the building itself, with a smaller amount dedicated towards architecture services, project management and more.

Since it was first built more than 80 years ago, the tower has remained relatively untouched by the university.

The plan for new updates was originally approved in late 2022 before Hartzell proposed that the project become part of the Capital Improvement Program.

The tower's new look should be completed in spring 2027, providing a new feel to the classic building.

Currently, the university is asking those interested to share their favorite memories of the tower online.
