Boundary changes might be coming for Manor ISD students

Students living in certain areas might be subject to changing schools in an attempt by the district to manage enrollment.

AUSTIN, Texas — Students attending Manor Independent School District might soon be subject to school changes in an attempt by the district to manage enrollment.

The district posted to Facebook on Feb. 7, saying it was starting a boundary review process through which students living in certain areas might be sent to different schools as a way to "get scholars learning closer to home and improve building utilization."

On Feb. 5, the Board of Trustees hosted a workshop to organize tentative plans for new boundaries at Decker Elementary School, Presidential Meadows Elementary School and parts of ShadowGlen Elementary School.

If approved, the adjustments would begin this fall.

Under the possible changes, students currently attending Decker Elementary School and living in the Loma Vista Manufactured Home Community, Oak Forest RV Resort and Bluestem Apartments at Loyola would enroll at Oak Meadows Elementary School, located at 5600 Decker Lane.

Students currently attending Presidential Meadows who live on Jones Road, Hogeye Road, Hibbs Lane, Bitting School Road, Ingrid Drive, Lucinda Drive, Morin Drive, Ann Showers Drive, Silvia Drive, Tristan Drive and Unice Drive would enroll at Blake Manor Elementary School, located at 18010 Blake Manor Road, under the possible changes.

Meanwhile the children of future residents who currently live in an undeveloped part of Manor would attend Lagos Elementary School, located at 11817 Murchison St., if houses are built on the property.

Superintendent Dr. Robert Sormani said there are two major reasons for considering the boundary adjustments.

"To get kids to school more quickly, so rezoning to a school much closer to where they live. And second, to prepare ourselves [for] future growth, which we know is coming. We have to relieve schools on the on the edge [of] overcrowding and move kids into school where there is less growth," Sormani said.

The attendance zone map could also be updated to reflect the boundaries currently being practiced for Pioneer Crossing Elementary School, though no changes are being proposed to the attendance zone. Adjusting the map still needs to be approved by the Board of Trustees.

Manor ISD is inviting families to attend informational sessions about the proposed boundary adjustments next week. One is scheduled for Monday Feb. 12 at 6 p.m. in the Blake Manor Elementary School cafeteria, and the other is scheduled for Thursday Feb. 15 at 6 p.m. in the Oak Meadows Elementary School cafeteria.

Trustees are expected to vote on the final elementary boundary proposal on March 25.

The district also said, in anticipation of the adjustment, the administration will explore options this spring for designated groups of students to remain at their current schools as long as transportation is provided by the parent or guardian.
