PFLUGERVILLE, Texas — A man known for his time on the field is hoping to spend some time behind a dais in Pflugerville.

Alex Okafor, a former Texas Football and NFL star, has filed to run for the Place 1 seat of the Pflugerville ISD school board. The seat, currently held by David Aguirre, is up for election, as is Place 2, currently held by Tony Hanson.

Pflugerville ISD trustees serve three-year terms. Aguirre has served on the board since 2021 and Hanson has served since 2017, but neither filed to run for re-election.

Okafor – who played for Pflugerville High School, then the University of Texas at Austin before playing in the NFL with the Kansas City Chiefs, New Orleans Saints and Arizona Cardinals – filed to run for the Place 1 seat in late January. He is currently running unopposed.

Okafor retired from football in 2022, according to KVUE's media partners at the Austin American-Statesman.

Two candidates are running for the school board's Place 2 seat: Melissa Lee, a community advocate, and Charlie Torres, a retired representative at Communication Workers of America.

To serve on the Pflugerville ISD board, applicants must:

  • be U.S. citizens who are 18 years old or older
  • have resided continuously in Texas for 12 months prior to the filing deadline and in Pflugerville ISD for six months prior to the deadline
  • be a registered voter in the area
  • have no final felony convictions
  • have no final judgements indicating they are totally mentally incapacitated or partially menially incapacitated without the right to vote

Pflugerville ISD will hold its election for Places 1 and 2 on May 4.
