Teens, 13 and 15, planned to rob Austin student before stabbing him: Sources

People close to the case believe the suspects arranged to rob Carson Smith, leading him to believe they wanted to buy vaping cartridges.

AUSTIN, Texas — An Anderson High School senior was fatally stabbed in January over in an attempted robbery that led to an altercation between him and two middle school students now charged with murder, according to several people familiar with the case.

Carson Smith, 18, died a day after the stabbing in Northwest Hills. A 13-year-old and a 15-year-old have been charged with murder and remain in a juvenile detention facility.

Police have not publicly discussed what happened, but those familiar with the incident said the suspects arranged a meeting with Smith in late January in which they pretended to want to buy marijuana cartridges used in vaping. Instead, they were planning to rob him, according to the sources.

The three got into the same car along Sonnet Avenue in Northwest Hills, when they got into an altercation. That's when police think the 15-year-old stabbed Smith.

People in the area attempted to perform first aid on Smith until medics arrived. He later died at Dell Seton Medical Center.
