A dozen gunmen killed during shootout near Texas-Mexico border

Details are limited, but officials said 12 rifles were seized following the shootout.

MEXICO CITY, Mexico — Twelve gunmen were killed late Sunday near the Texas border, according to Mexican authorities.

The security department of Tamaulipas said a shootout took place following a confrontation in the township of Miguel Aleman, which is across the border from Roma, Texas.

According to the department's social media account, soldiers came under attack during the confrontation, which led to 12 suspects being "reduced" during the shootout. The Associated Press stated that reduced is an old-style reference to killing the suspects. Authorities said 12 rifles were also seized at the scene.

While no other details were released on the attack, no group has immediately claimed responsibility for the incident, according to the Associated Press. The Mexican army also said it did not have any information on the attack.

Miguel Aleman has long been the scene of turf battles and violence involving the Gulf cartel and the old Zetas cartel, which is now known as the Cartel of the Northeast.
