Physical disturbance leads to APD shooting armed man at apartment complex near Barton Creek Square Mall

APD said the officer who fired his weapon has been with the department for seven months.

AUSTIN, Texas — A physical disturbance led to a shooting involving an Austin Police Department (APD) officer early Saturday morning in southwest Austin.

The shooting happened at approximately 2 a.m. at an apartment complex near the Barton Creek Mall.

Officers were called out to the complex on Tamarron Boulevard just before 2 a.m. after the caller said they could hear the disturbance from a nearby apartment.

Two officers with the Austin Police Department approached the apartment's front door, while a third APD officer approached the sliding glass door from the patio.

APD said the third officer saw two suspects inside the apartment, including an armed man who approached the front door. APD Interim Chief Robin Henderson said the officer recognized a possible threat and shot the armed man. The second suspect involved in the incident was not injured.

The armed man was taken to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. Henderson said the officer who shot his weapon has been with the department for seven months and will be placed on administrative duty.

Bodycam footage of the shooting was captured and is expected to be released within 10 business days, per department policy. Meanwhile, two concurrent investigations into the shooting will take place.
