Mother allegedly leads police on chase with 5-month-old baby in front seat

According to the affidavit, the suspect placed her 5-month-old baby in the front passenger seat with the child seat installed incorrectly.

AUSTIN — A woman has been charged with evading arrest and endangering a child after she allegedly evaded police with her 5-month-old baby riding in the front passenger seat.

On April 16 around 9:34 p.m., police prepared to stop the suspect in the 2100 block of East William Cannon Drive after finding that she was driving with an expired registration, according to the affidavit.

The suspect, identified as Alexis Tello, 31, then allegedly changed lanes rapidly and pulled into a parking lot off of South Interstate Highway 35.

Officers then activated their emergency lights and initiated a traffic stop in the Taco Bell parking lot but Tello exited the lot and headed north on the I-35 frontage road, according to police. Police said at this point, it became clear that Tello was not attempting to stop after she passed up multiple places to pull over.

Police then allegedly activated their emergency sirens but Tello continued to ignore their attempts to stop her.

According to the affidavit, Tello eventually came to a stop at the intersection of Woodward Street and Elmo Road where police took her into custody. Tello allegedly told police that she did not stop because she knew she had warrants for her arrest.

Tello had her 5-month-old baby unsecured in the front passenger seat during the pursuit, police said.

The affidavit states, "Tello had her child secured in a child safety seat that was improperly placed in the front passenger seat of the vehicle and not the back seats. Additionally, the child seat was not installed to the seat and had nothing securing it down to the seat."

Police said if there had been a collision, the seat would have been able to freely move around.
