Man with dementia kidnapped and held for ransom, according to SAPD

Police arrested two people accused of kidnapping the man who police say is experiencing advanced stages of dementia.

SAN ANTONIO — A man and woman are in jail, accused of kidnapping a man with dementia and holding him for ransom, according to a report from the San Antonio Police Department (SAPD).

The victim in this case has advanced stages of dementia, and police said he had no idea where he was or who he was with.

For five long hours, the alleged victim’s daughter waited in fear as the accused kidnappers told her she wouldn’t get her father back until they received their money. Charlonna Murray and Ari LeJean Burgett-Jordan have been charged with aggravated kidnapping in connection with the case.

According to a police report, it happened on Jan. 23 when a family member filed a missing person’s report. The public was asked to be on the lookout for the victim’s car.

Officers said the victim’s daughter had repeatedly called her father’s cell phone. It was eventually Burgett-Jordan who answered, demanding that she hand over $1,000 if she ever wanted to see her father again.

For hours, officers were engaged in an intense search for the victim until they discovered the suspects at Northeast Baptist Hospital, according to the police report.

Murray told officers they were there for a dog bite injury. But according to the report, detectives didn’t buy her story, and said they had enough evidence to arrest both her and Burgett-Jordan.

The victim was found safe and unharmed. It’s still unclear if the suspects randomly targeted the victim or knew him.

Both suspects are in the Bexar County jail, each being held on a $100,000 bond.
