Kaitlin Armstrong sent to Central Texas prison after starting appeal process for murder conviction

Armstrong is currently projected to be released from prison in 2112.

AUSTIN, Texas — After starting the process to appeal her murder conviction, Kaitlin Armstrong has been moved to a prison in Central Texas.

Jail records show Armstrong has been sent to the Dr. Lane Murray Unit, a women's prison in Gatesville, after being sentenced to 90 years in prison for killing professional cyclist Anna Moriah Wilson in 2022.

The 36-year-old Armstrong is projected to be released from jail in July 2112 but is eligible for parole starting mid-2052.

At the end of last year, Armstrong's lawyer filed a motion for a new trial. The motion stated that there was evidence a prosecution witness wasn't properly qualified to say how Armstrong's DNA showed up on Wilson's bicycle. It also said that a new trial should be granted because a judge denied a prior motion by the defense to stifle her statements when she was initially questioned by police.

In the motion, there were also claims that Armstrong was pregnant at the time of her arrest and that she had been pregnant at an additional time, but it doesn't clarify what happened with either pregnancy.

Before her lawyer started the motion for a new trial, Armstrong started the appeal process as well. Court documents show Armstrong filed a notice of appeal on Nov. 27, but didn't explain why she was appealing the conviction.

Days later, Travis County District Attorney José Garza said the DA's Office filed a motion to dismiss the "escape causing bodily injury" charge against Armstrong after she tried escaping custody during a doctor's appointment on Oct. 11. Garza said they decided to drop the charge after consulting with law enforcement and Wilson's family.
