AUSTIN, Texas — Towards the start of each new year, Girl Scouts across the country put their entrepreneurial skills to the test, selling boxes of cookies outside of store fronts and throughout their local neighborhoods.
This year, the Girl Scouts of Central Texas are once again partnering up with We are Blood to encourage local residents to donate blood and platelets for those in need.
Any donors throughout the month of February will be rewarded with a free box of Girl Scout cookies. Options include Thin Mints, Caramel DeLites, Peanut Butter Patties and Adventurefuls, a variety of cookie that was released just two years ago.
Currently, Type O negative and O positive blood types are the most requested, but We Are Blood said any donation can help make a difference.
In fact, typical whole blood donations aren't the only option. Platelet cells are also needed to help patients, including burn and accident victims, premature babies and people who have recently undergone organ transplants.
Double red cells are also needed by hospital patients, and donations can be made once every 35 days, according to We Are Blood.
We Are Blood serves 50 hospitals and facilities through 10 Central Texas counties. Donations can benefit cancer, trauma and pediatric transplant patients.
We Are Blood's donation centers are located on North Lamar Boulevard in South Austin, Round Rock and Cedar Park. A variety of times are available for appointments.
Those looking to donate can visit We Are Blood's website or call 512-206-1266 to schedule an appointment.
