Tech company VMware slashing 577 jobs in Austin

The move comes shortly after Broadcom acquired VMware from Round Rock-based Dell Technologies for $61 billion.

AUSTIN, Texas — A tech company with a big presence in Austin has begun laying off hundreds of employees.

Cloud computing company VMware, which has an office in northwest Austin near RM 2222, is cutting 577 jobs, according to a WARN letter sent to the Texas Workforce Commission.

The move comes shortly after Broadcom acquired VMware from Round Rock-based Dell Technologies for $61 billion. The transaction closed in November.

Broadcom sent letters to VMware employees in Austin, notifying them that layoffs will begin on Jan. 26.

"This will not result in closure of the entire facility, but will only impact certain employees selected for layoff," Jill Turner, Broadcom's vice president of human relations, said in the letter, according to KVUE’s media partners at the Austin American-Statesman. "The planned action is expected to be permanent."

Broadcom and VMware layoffs are taking place across the country. They include 184 employees in Brookfield, Colorado, according to KVUE’s sister station, KUSA. VMware has also announced a shutdown of its office in Boston, cutting 150 jobs, as well as 217 layoffs in Atlanta, the Statesman reports.
