North Austin brewery suddenly shuts its doors, joins growing list of brewery closures

Oskar Blues Brewery in North Austin abruptly closed without notice.

AUSTIN, Texas — Oskar Blues Brewery in North Austin is no more.

The Colorado-based craft brewery, located along Metric Boulevard, put up a sign on its door, which simply reads "We are closed," along with:

"We have enjoyed being part of the Austin craft beer and music community, and we thank everyone who supported our business along the way. If you are still interested in finding our beer, it remains available at retailers across the state of Texas."

However, no reason was given as to why the brewery shut down. It's also not clear what happened to its employees. KVUE reached out to Oskar Blues on Saturday but did not get a response.

The sudden closure comes as other breweries situated in the North Austin area have also closed.

In 2022, Adelbert's Brewing and 4th Tap Brewing shut down.

The latest brewery closure, according to Craft Beer Austin,  was Circle Brewing Co. on Braker Lane in September.

Despite the closures, other businesses in the area appear to be staying afloat.

Bobby Mullins works as a brew master at Celis Brewery on the same road Oskar Blues was once located. He said he was devastated to learn of a fellow brewery closing.

"I just feel terrible for [Oskar Blues Brewery] team," Mullins said. "We are seeing a lot of breweries closed, but there's a lot of businesses struggling and a lot of people struggling, too."

Mullins said as for Celis Brewery's business, the situation, for the most part, is good.

"Things are going well. We're seeing things kind of moving in an upward motion. You know, things could always be better, but we're hopeful," Mullins said.

Mullins also added that post-pandemic, several businesses have dealt with a number of shifts and what they're seeing is people leaning toward more wine and spirit drinks, along with people spending their money differently.
