Local tanning salon reopens using Gov. Greg Abbott's guidelines

"We're starting out small with just one employee in the space, with one client in the business at a time," explained ATX Tans owner Melissa Rolston.

AUSTIN, Texas — Gov. Greg Abbott's executive order allowed hair, nail and tanning salons to reopen at 25% capacity Friday. Meanwhile, the owner of ATX Tans airbrush spray tanning in North Austin didn't waste a minute to reopen.

The owner, Melissa Rolston, said as soon as you walk in the door your temperature will be taken and if you don't have a fever, she'll ask you to put on a mask and offer you some gloves.

"With airbrush spray tanning, there is no contact with the customer," said Rolston. "They stand facing the screen and I'll spray them at a distance."

She said appointments are rolling in but she is making sure she doesn't overlap them.

"We're starting out small with just one employee in the space, with one client in the business at a time," explained Rolston.

Reopening isn't as easy as it sounds for some hair stylists. Here's why

During the session, she said they both will wear a mask until it's time to spray the client's face. After she puts the product on their face, they will put it back on. After every client, she said she'll change gloves, rotate rooms and sanitize.

Raquel Sandoval has been a client since the salon first opened back in September.

"I have been waiting forever and being pale inside is the worst thing," said Sandoval.

To minimize contact, she prepaid her session, which is recommended.

Rolston said with this typically being the busiest time of the year, paired with the state reopening, she is optimistic about the future.

"As we get back to normal and those events are planned again," said Rolston, "we know that the brides, the bridal parties and everyone will come back to get a tan."
