USPS holiday shipping deadlines you need to know for 2024

Here's what you need to know.

WASHINGTON — It’s that time of year again—when you realize the holidays are right around the corner and your shopping list isn’t quite finished.

Soon enough, you might find yourself frantically Googling “last-minute gifts” and “can I mail something today and still have it arrive by Christmas?”

No need to panic because USPS has your back with their 2024 recommended holiday mailing and shipping deadlines, so you can avoid the last-minute scramble and ensure your gifts make it under the tree in time.

Here’s the breakdown:

For the lower 48

  • USPS Ground Advantage: Ship by Dec. 18
  • First-Class Mail: Also by Dec. 18
  • Priority Mail: Dec. 19. If you’re cutting it close but still want to make it in time for Christmas, this is your go-to.
  • Priority Mail Express: Procrastinators, rejoice! You’ve got until Dec. 21 to get that package on its merry way.

For Alaska and Hawaii residents

  • USPS Ground Advantage: You’ve got until Dec. 16, so don’t dilly-dally.
  • First-Class Mail: Keep the holiday spirit intact by sending those cards and gifts by Dec. 18.
  • Priority Mail: Dec. 19. That gives you a little more time to pull it together.
  • Priority Mail Express: Even the islands can stretch it to Dec. 20—but that’s seriously the last call.

For our international and military shippers

Pro Tips for Mailing Success:

  • Packaging: Make sure your gift is wrapped securely—no one wants a cookie tin explosion in transit.
  • Free Supplies: USPS has free shipping supplies you can order online. Because who doesn’t love free?
  • Post Office Hours: Check your local Post Office’s hours at usps.com.

“The earlier you send, the better.” USPS strongly urges everyone to channel their inner holiday planner and get those packages in the mail sooner rather than later. After all, no one wants to be the person whose gift shows up just in time for New Year’s.
