'Granny basketball' is growing in Central Texas

A basketball league for people 50 and older is getting more and more members to join 'Granny Basketball.'

ROUND ROCK, Texas — On any given night in Round Rock, you can find some basketball.

Whether it's your every night pick-up game or, on Thursdays, a special game for a special group.

It's a team of women 50 years or older all playing basketball.

They treat practice just like anyone else would, with stretching and then drills working on the fundamentals before a scrimmage.

"There are people on the team that have never played and people who have even played in college," Linda Toerper, the person who brought the idea here to Texas, said. "The idea was originally in Iowa, and it's taken after the 1920's rules, so we didn't really make up everything."

Toerper was introduced to the game in her home state of Iowa and after moving to Texas, she wanted to continue to play.

Now, others are joining her and they will be playing in a regional competition in the next few months.

People like Tommie Ortega are newbies to this version of the sport.

"Sometimes, you try to do a layup and you got to have one foot on the floor, you can't jump," Ortega, who played Varsity ball in high school, said. "You can't jump, so you're stretching out."

They're hoping to play the game they love into their 70's and for years to come.
