A former classmate of Pearl Moen, the 18-year old charged with attempted murder for a brutal stabbing, told KVUE that Moen was shy girl who was never angry or violent.
"She was a very sweet girl, she seemed to be introverted and shy at times but overall she was very sweet and creative," said the woman who did not want to be identified.
She told KVUE News she and Moen attended the Austin School for Performing and Visual Arts together until Fall 2013, when Moen left to be homeschooled.
Police say in November 2014, Moen stabbed a women who fell asleep outside while watching the sun come up approximately 21 times.
According to the arrest affidavit, investigators found disturbing entries in Moen's journal that read, in part, "I stabbed an innocent woman to death earlier today. It was absolutely fantastic."
As to why she did it, Moen wrote "Other than the fact that I'm a homicidal psychopath. I have a deep hatred towards people right now."
"Psychopath really isn't a term from a psychiatric point of view that we would consider to be a major mental illness that we treat and it gets kind of caught up in so much cultural and other stuff," said Seton Healthcare Psychiatrist Dr. Roger McRoberts.
While McRoberts says he can't diagnose Moen based on the information that's been made public, he said violent behavior is characteristic of people with behavioral concerns.
"What I do know about a patient with a behavioral health diagnoses as well as a substance abuse disorder is much more likely to be involved in violence then someone with just a pure mental health diagnosis," McRoberts explained.
Moen's former classmate thinks that's the case with her old friend.
"We lost touch a little bit over the past year and I heard from other friends she began to start hanging out with the wrong crowd and doing drugs, so I think maybe that's part of the reason she was led to do this," she said.
"I wish someone or myself could have helped her in any way," she added.
McRogers said if you come in contact with someone who seems depressed or suicidal, you should take them seriously and seek medical help for the person.
Moen is being held in the Travis County jail on $1 million bond.
