Breezy days will increase wildfire danger for Hill Country this week

Breezy and dry conditions through the middle of the work week could lead to increased wildfire danger.

AUSTIN, Texas — After this weekend's cloudy, muggy, and stormy conditions, the weather on Tuesday feels quite miraculous here in Central Texas. Tuesday's sunshine is abundant, as low pressure heads east, and high pressure settles in for the rest of the week.

However, the nice conditions do come with an uptick in breezy weather. And because we did not receive a drought-busting rain Monday night, many places across central and south Texas are still left on the drier side. Breezy winds, low dewpoints, and dry vegetation called for a Red Flag Warning across the Edwards Plateau and South Texas Plains Tuesday.

The warning lasts until 9 p.m. CDT. There are also burn bans in place for Medina, Uvalde, Kinney, Zavala, and Kimble County as the drought category in this area continues to range from moderate to extreme.

Locally, in the KVUE viewing area, our fire weather danger is not as extreme, but Tuesday night through Thursday, the Texas A&M Forest Service has moved a portion of the Hill Country into the "high" fire outlook category.

On Wednesday and Thursday Mason, Llano, and Gillespie County will be discouraged from outdoor burning due to the same overarching weather conditions; low humidity, breezy winds, warm temperatures, and dry vegetation. Areas highlighted in Tuesday's Red Flag Warning will remain in the "very high" to "extreme" thresholds for fire danger Wednesday and Thursday.

The breezy weather will also continue into Friday this week, with gusts of 20-25 mph forecast. Hopefully, additional showers and thunderstorms on tap for this weekend, should help counteract some of the dryness across the region. But for now we just want to discourage outdoor burning for those high-risk areas, so we can all enjoy the nice weather this week!
