Transfer QB Jayden de Laura leaves Texas State after settling civil sexual assault case

De Laura initially transferred to Texas State after spending four seasons in the Pac-12 with Washington State and Arizona.

AUSTIN, Texas — Jayden de Laura will not be quarterback for the Texas State University Bobcat football team in the fall.

In a news release sent on Wednesday, the university confirmed the Arizona transfer was no longer enrolled at the school.

"Jayden de Laura has withdrawn as a student at Texas State University and will not be a part of the Texas State football program," the one-line statement read.

The move to bring de Laura to the program caused controversy after de Laura settled a sexual assault case in his home state of Hawaii when he was a minor, one day before becoming a Bobcat.

After the news was released, many members of Texas State's student body expressed outrage, which was set to culminate with a student-led protest on campus later this week.

For the football team, losing de Laura, who spent the last two seasons at Arizona and the two prior at Washington State, puts the team in a precarious situation. De Laura's initial transfer sparked a domino effect that resulted in incumbent starting quarterback TJ Finley announcing his transfer to Western Kentucky. Finley's backup from last season, Malik Hornsby, also transferred to Arkansas State.

The situation has left Texas State without a clear option at quarterback going into the 2024 season.
