Multi-vehicle wreck, car fire on I-35 in South Austin injures 6, including 3 kids

The Texas Department of Transportation said three lanes on southbound I-35 after U.S. 290 and Highway 71 Ben White Freeway is closed due to the crash.

AUSTIN — Austin-Travis County EMS took several people to the hospital, including children, who were injured in a multi-vehicle crash and car fire on Interstate 35 in South Austin Friday afternoon.

ATCEMS said they responded to the 4700 block of southbound I-35 just after Shelby Lane at noon. There, they were told one of the vehicles was on fire. Medics said Austin Fire confirmed that the fire was out at 12:12 p.m.

Medics said three adults and three children were injured in the incident. A girl with serious injuries was taken to a hospital, two boys with potentially serious injuries were also taken to the hospital. Two women were also taken to the hospital but they are expected to be OK.

The Texas Department of Transportation said the crash caused three lanes on southbound I-35 after U.S. 290 and Highway 71 Ben White Freeway to close, but those lanes have since reopened, according to KVUE's partners at the Austin American-Statesman. Austin police are investigating.
