Widow of man killed by concrete slab plans to file wrongful death lawsuit

Lourdes misses everything about her husband --- his smile, kind words, and his laughter. She said Bahman was her best friend, one she believes should still be here today.

A devoted husband, father, brother, and friend is how Lourdes Kaman describes Bahman Kaman.

Lourdes misses everything about her husband --- his smile, kind words, and his laughter. She said Bahman was her best friend, one she believes should still be here today.

But, that's not her reality.

On Aug. 9, 2017, Bahman Kaman was working at a construction site when a 20-ton concrete slab fell and killed him.

“How could something like that happen? It just doesn’t make sense,” Lourdes Kaman said.

It's a question that led Lourdes to hire Attorney Scott Hendler with the Hendler/Flores Law Firm.

Hendler said they're filing a wrongful death lawsuit against Coreslab, the concrete manufacturer Kaman spent a decade working for as an independent contractor, the general contractor and designs professionals.

Hendler said Coreslab neglected a number of key safety standards -- including using only one brace to hold up the massive concrete panels that it was installing instead of two, which are required. OSHA cited Coreslab for two separate safety violations in connection to Kaman's accident each totaling more than $12,000.

“The fine issued by OSHA while serious is not enough to deter a company like Coreslab from repeating these violations again in the future,” Hendler said.

But for Lourdes, she wants her husband's case to serve as a reminder of what she believes can go wrong at construction sites.

“It’s a promise to Bahman and myself and to my daughter this happened for a reason and my family will do something about it,” Lourdes Kaman said.

Bahman leaves behind an 8-year-old daughter, as well.

KVUE reached out Coreslab. But, we have not heard back from the company.
