Officials: WilCo will not enter cave because foundation has shifted

Work has stopped at the Cambria Drive cave due to the ground shifting at the cave entrance, officials say.

Williamson County officials told KVUE Thursday afternoon they would not enter the cave found underneath homes on Cambria Drive because its foundation has shifted.

Officials said in a Thursday press release sections of asphalt roadway and concrete curb show downward movement. Williamson County added County Engineer Terron Evertson would work with structural engineers to determine a way to secure the cave opening so consultants have a safe way to enter and exit the cave.

Williamson County has not determined a definite cause for the cave opening, but officials said utility line installation may have scored or thinned the cave ceiling.

The cave first opened after neighbors had their water shut off last week.

As of Thursday, the county said nothing has fallen and the cave opening has not changed size.

The county said the cave is not a threat to homes at this time.

County engineer Terron Evertson released this statement Thursday:

“Public safety continues to be our main concern,” stated Evertson. “We are moving our barricades back a few feet in an abundance of caution. We appreciate the public’s patience while the road is closed, and their continued support in respecting the barricades and not trying to get closer to the cave entrance.”

Cambria Drive will remain closed for several weeks while Williamson County works with the Texas Commission on Enviornmental Quality (TCEQ) on remediation effort, officials said.
