Team Rubicon heads up volunteer flood response

A nonprofit group made up of veterans is heading up the volunteer response in a flood ravaged neighborhood.

AUSTIN -- A nonprofit group made of up U.S. veterans is heading up the volunteer response in the Onion Creek neighborhood in Southeast Austin. Team Rubicon is an international group that uses military training in disaster zones.

We can go where people don't want to go, and found out in the process, when we are helping others, we are also helping ourselves, said Team Rubicon coordinator Chance Karshens.

Team Rubicon has coordinated more than 1,000 volunteers to help victims of the Halloween floods, including Yvette Griego.

I am grateful for every volunteer that has come in. They have helped enormously, said Griego.

The volunteers working at Griego's house on Saturday included a couple who lost their home in the Bastrop wildfires.

You have to pay it forward, and we appreciate all the help we got out there, said Leticia Vazquez.

Team Rubicon will continue going door to door in the Onion Creek neighborhood to assess and offer help this weekend.
