Stretch on I-35 frontage road causing problems for drivers

Several blow outs were reported on a stretch of the frontage road near 49th Street.

Over the past two days, there's been complaints about a stretch of the I-35 frontage road damaging cars.

Jason Oberle said he was driving down the southbound frontage road near 49th Street last Sunday when his car hit uneven road.

"I ended up busting my front left rim, blew out the side wall of my tire and also damaged my back rim," Oberle said. "I called Austin 3-1-1 and they took a report."

Oberle said after he pulled off the road, he witnessed three more blow outs.

"I was told that I'd be contacted within in an hour, so I sat here for an hour and was helplessly watching people left and right hit the concrete," Oberle said.

Hubcaps littered the shoulder Tuesday morning, evidence of other run-ins with the rugged stretch of road. After KVUE contacted TxDOT, crews came out to smooth things over.

Oberle said one thing they can't fix is the cost of repairs to his car -- estimated to be about $2,500.

TxDOT released the following statement Tuesday:

"The area between 48th and 49th is under construction as part of the 51st Street project. We are closing the inside lane in order to make repairs; however, final paving cannot occur until the rain ends and the pavement dries out. We will be placing signs alerting drivers to the "rough pavement ahead. This is an active construction zone, and we ask that drivers use caution as they move through the area."
