Officers use woman's cell phone data to find, rescue her nearly 15 hours after she crashes SUV

Shepherdsville Police were told a woman in her 60s drove into a ravine Monday night around 8 p.m. She was found just before 11 a.m. Tuesday.

SHEPHERDSVILLE, Ky. — A woman who went missing after a crash Monday night in Bullitt County has been found safe.

Maj. Jason Paulley with the Shepherdsville Police Department said they received a report of a crash around 7:50 p.m. They were told a woman in her 60s drove into a ravine and was unable to get out of her vehicle. The woman, identified as 57-year-old Nora Thompson had contacted her family, but was disorientated and did not know her location.

Thompson's family became extremely concerned after she stopped responding to their calls and texts. Her daughter immediately contacted authorities and posted to the local Facebook group "I Am Dixie Highway," asking people to search for her mother.

Police, EMS, and fire crews searched for several hours Monday night but were not able to find her or the crash site. The department used the woman's cell phone data to determine her location. From the phone data, her last known location was around Cedar Grove Rd. near I-65 and Preston Highway.

They resumed searching Tuesday morning and LMPD's helicopter spotted the woman's vehicle sometime before 11 a.m.

Shepherdsville Police Chief Rick McCubbin said Thompson was found dazed but conscious.

McCubbin said Thompson said she was extremely lucky, "It's a horrible accident, but obviously a good outcome and we don't see that often,"

Strangers to the family, like Jamie Underwood were relieved to hear Thompson had been found. Underwood had seen Thompson's daughter's Facebook post and decided to come help search.

"We have been up and down Cedar Grove Road just looking and checking in woods that might have been mowed down; not knowing that she was right up under our nose," she said.

Thompson was immediately rushed to the hospital.
