Crews drill around Cambria Drive cave, take samples

Crews at the Cambria Drive cave site Tuesday took samples to measure the cavern's strength.

Crews on Tuesday worked through the rain to drill into Cambria Drive.

They are taking samples from the cave ceiling to measure how strong it is.

Last week, crews installed a large new cover.

Mitsu lives in one of the three homes above the cave. She does not want her last name mentioned for privacy reasons.

"It's very hard to believe that somebody built a house on the cave,” she said. “We are so frustrated. It's not worth fixing, upgrading our house anymore."

She has unanswered questions.

"Should we rent a house or (are we) just stuck with this house,” she asked.

Tim Kelley lives next to the cave opening. He worries the drilling will reveal a chamber under his home.

"Cause all the caves are in a line pointing towards our house. And if they find another one close to our property line, just makes me wonder if it can go even farther."

Williamson County said crews are drilling at five different spots. And surveyors on Tuesday made reference points around the perimeter on Cambria Drive.

“So that they can do a better job of matching up what's under the earth to what's above the earth,” said Williamson County spokesperson Connie Odom.

We asked the County what is being done to help homeowners above the cave.

"We share in their frustration,” Odom said. “This is something that's new for all of us. We've not experienced a cave opening like this. We've had experiences where during construction we've found caves, but not this type of situation."

She added the County is working as quickly as it can.

“And as safely as we can to try to come up with what our plan is going to going forward,” said Odom.

The County said it is still too early to say what might come next.

Although KVUE is not aware of any damage to the homes because of the cave, we checked with the Texas Department of Insurance to see if insurance would cover cave damage. The department said it would depend on the person's plan, but insurance policies typically would not cover earth movement damage.
