AUSTIN -- Under Secretary of the United States Army Ryan McCarthy announced Wednesday in a letter to the House Armed Services Committee that Austin was named one of the 15 finalists for the Army's proposed Army Futures Command headquarters, which will serve the Army's modernization priorities.

“We are thrilled that the United States Army is considering Austin as a potential location for its Army Futures Command,” said Mike Rollins, CEO of the Greater Austin Chamber of Commerce.

Rollins said that the Austin region is already home to the Department of Defense’s Defense Innovation Unit Experimental (DIUX), as well as the Texas Reserve Command and the largest U.S. Army installation in Fort Hood.

"We believe that our local community more than meets the criteria for this new venture," Rollins added. "Our strong academic institutions and our leading technology innovation sector have a history of collaborating to find solutions.”

Rollins said the Greater Austin Chamber of Commerce will continue to work with Mayor Steve Adler and other community partners to engage in further discussions with the Army to prove why Austin has the "talent, collaborative community, and experience necessary to ensure the Army Futures Command would be successful here.”

The Army Futures Command is expected to house about 500 civilian and military personnel.

The 15 finalist cities include Atlanta, Austin, Boston, Chicago, Dallas, Denver, Houston, Los Angeles, Minneapolis, New York, Philadelphia, Raleigh, San Diego, San Francisco and Seattle.
