UPS now requires customers show ID to ship or drop off packages

Delivery companies are making changes following the Austin package explosions.

AUSTIN – The Austin package explosions are sparking change for delivery companies.

The UPS store on Balcones Woods Drive in Austin posted a sign on its door in light of the Austin explosions.

The sign reads: “Due to the recent package bombings in the Austin area, you will need an ID to ship and drop off packages. We appreciate your consideration.”

Despite the extra step, most people told KVUE it's worth it.

"I'm happy to do it because it was really scary thinking that my kids could step on a package that could blow up and if it means showing your ID prevent something like that or to help when someone does something like that cause I don't think you can ever prevent it.. to catch them faster,” said Brandy Glasspoole, a customer. “I'm happy to do it."

"It's all in our benefit, in our safety,” said Clifford Welch, another customer. “I don't complain going to the airport and having to take my shoes off or anything. It’s just the world we live in today. I think we need to accept that.”

This isn’t the only change, either. UPS is also asking that unknown shippers open their packages before they can be sent off.

Here’s the company’s full statement:

UPS utilizes a variety of security procedures. In light of the uncertainty surrounding the Austin bombings, the company implemented a temporary process for unknown shippers with unlabeled packages who wished to send a parcel at a UPS Store, company counter or other authorized service location. Packages of known shippers are not being opened. The temporary screening process requires unknown customers to tender their package open, or voluntarily open their package for visual inspection. The UPS location reseals and labels the packages in the presence of the shipper. Our first priority is the safety of our employees and the public. Our service terms enable UPS to ensure that any package tendered into our network is deemed safe, either through visual inspection or certification by a known shipper. Customers who choose not to accept this policy may select an alternate shipping service. We will evaluate the necessity of this policy based on information provided by law enforcement as a result of developments in Austin this morning. UPS extends our condolences to friends and family of victims. We appreciate the dedicated efforts of law enforcement. UPS shares in the feeling of relief from Wednesday morning’s news, yet we remain focused on maintaining our network security while the investigation continues.
