Fayette County farmers track down cattle after storms sweep through

Several farmers in South Fayette County had to track down their missing cattle on Wednesday morning following storms.

SCHULENBURG, Texas — Crews with the National Weather Service were out surveying the damage in Fayette County after Tuesday night's tornado.

It touched down near Swiss Alp, between Schulenberg and La Grange. The Fayette County Sheriff's Office reported two more tornado sightings at Highway 77 and FM 609, but those haven't been confirmed yet.

On Wednesday, KVUE spoke with residents in Schulenberg who were hunkered down near the tornado.

"We went into a bathroom inside the barn because we thought it would be good, and, while we were in there, the wind picked up probably 50 to 60 mph," said Russell Whitaker.

In the past 48 hours, Fayette County has received 9.24 inches of rainfall.

Farmers along the Farek Loth Road said they've had to check in with neighbors to find their lost cattle that got washed into other people's yards overnight.

"Some of the neighbors' cattle though were caught or washed through fences that were torn down from the high water and ended up in the neighbors' pastures," said farmer Derrell Ohnheiser.

The National Weather Service was unable to complete a survey of the tornado on Wednesday due to the heavy rain and road closures.
